Teenagers

It may be easy to think that teenagers and young adults do not need counselling and psychotherapy - they just need to get on with life. However as an experienced counsellor and psychotherapist I feel that the pressure put on young people and teenagers today has never been greater.

Some pressures on teenagers and young adults:

  • Living in a quick fix culture
  • Media pressure to look a certain way
  • Hectic pace of life
  • Breakup of the family unit
  • Low self-esteem
  • Academic and exam pressure
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Bullying
  • Problems with relationships
  • Availability of drugs and alcohol
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Depression
  • Fear of growing up
  • Confusion and uncertainty about the future
  • Feeling different/alone

Teenagers and young adults may act out their frustrations in what could be seen as anti-social behaviour such as becoming withdrawn, being angry, self harming, using alcohol or drugs, or problematic eating.

Bottled up feelings such as anger and anxiety can become intense and counselling and psychotherapy offers a chance to explore them in a way that is seldom possible with friends or family.
